Plastic and reconstructive surgery is often used for closing and reconstructing large defects in the skin which may have resulted from cancer removal, severe wound trauma to the skin, burn injuries, etc. This may involve the use of skin grafts, local skin flaps, distant skin flaps utilizing the arterial blood supply, skin expanders, and proper wound bandaging and management. An understanding of wound healing as well as local and regional blood supply is important. A few of the common procedures are discussed.
